European U16 women's basketball tournament runs until Sunday.
Until Sunday, Matosinhos hosts the European Under16 women's basketball, which brings together 16 teams, including the Portuguese.
The competition, which began on the 19th, takes place at the Centro de Desportos e Congressos de Matosinhos and at the Guifões municipal pavilion, and is supported by the Matosinhos City Hall and Matosinhos Sport.
This morning, the responsible for the organization and the representatives of the 16 competing teams and referees were received in the Salão Nobre dos Paços do Concelho.
The session counted with the participation of the Mayor, Luísa Salgueiro, the sport councilman, Vasco Pinho, the administrator of Matosinhos Sport, Henrique Calisto, the president of the Portuguese Basketball Federation, Manuel Fernandes, and the commissioner of the International Basketball Federation, Maja Vukanovic.
Luísa Salgueiro welcomed the participants, pointing out that it is "a privilege for Matosinhos to host this competition" with great sporting impact, but also economically for the municipality.
"We believe this is a way to attract more people to practice basketball, but also to attract more visitors. We want them to come back to Matosinhos, to taste the best fish in the world, to visit our beaches and our equipment", she stated.
The mayor recalled the municipality's bet in sports training, with 10 thousand athletes practicing federated sports. In the specific case of basketball, she highlighted the important work developed by the Leça's Basketball Sports Group and by Guifões SC, with male and female athletes competing in all levels.
The municipality's vice-president, Carlos Mouta, the councillor for Economic Dynamism, Commerce and Tourism, Marta Pontes, and the vice-president of the Portuguese Basketball Federation, Manuel Albano, were also present.
Besides sports, the realization of this event involves the municipal services of tourism and environment.
A Tourism stand was installed in the Sports and Congress Center of Matosinhos. The hotel units involved in the competition also provide, in partnership with the municipality, informative material about the county.
The delegations also have the opportunity to get to know some of the main points of interest of the territory, through guided tours to various places such as the Conservas Pinhais Factory Tour.
In partnership with Lipor, recycling circuits were created in the pavilions where the competition takes place, contributing to a greater environmental awareness.
