27 years of Quinta de Santiago Museum

Anniversary celebrated with activities for the whole family

This Sunday, 2 April, the Quinta de Santiago Museum celebrated its 27th anniversary. A day with a programme aimed at the general public and families with various recreational proposals.

Building a giant flower in the garden with families, making a fleur-de-lis with the stencil technique, based on the decorative and symbolic motif found in the Museum, a game-tour in which the idea was to unveil the stories and secrets hidden in the foundations of the Casa dos Santiago or a conversation about the António Carneiro portrait with Laura Castro, were some of the challenges posed to the families.

On a birthday day, there was also a moment of congratulations and commemorative cake. The Deputy Mayor, Carlos Mouta, and the Councillor for Culture, Fernando Rocha, were present and associated themselves with the commemorations of the museum.

It was on 2 April 1996 that, following an operation to restore the palace in Leça da Palmeira, designed by the Venetian architect Nicola Bigaglia, the Quinta de Santiago Museum opened its doors for the first time.

The Museum is housed in a historic building in a prominent location of the city, in Leça da Palmeira, and surrounded by a garden. Acquired by the City Council in 1968, the building is a privileged witness of the profound urban and social transformations that the city has known in the last 100 years. Closed for restoration work on the structure on the 29th July 2006, the space reopened on the 28th June 2009, maintaining the guideline of being a space for art and culture in which, apart from exhibitions, concerts, theatre and dance performances, conferences, artistic workshops and courses, among others, take place.
