50th anniversary celebrations

Congratulations to Augusto Gomes Secondary School

Augusto Gomes Secondary School (ESAG) celebrates this year its 50th anniversary.

The commemorative session took place today in the multipurpose room of that educational establishment and was attended by the Councillor for Education of the Matosinhos City Hall, António Correia Pinto.

Under the scope of the CinESAG project, the film "Única" was presented. Directed by Paula Cunha and Pedro Rodrigues, the film presents the vision of students, teachers and employees throughout 50 years, from landscapes, texts, photographs, sounds, objects and videos.

This was followed by a play about the school's patron - Augusto Gomes, by the theatre club "Teatradas". Directed by Arminda Gonçalves and João Amaral, the play focuses on a group of students who look at paintings by Augusto Gomes at an exhibition and imagine themselves as the figures represented in the works of the painter from Matosinhos.

Finally, the Matosinhos String Quartet presented a recital composed by works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), Eurico Carrapatoso (1962) and Joseph Haydn (1732- 1809).

Created by the Matosinhos City Hall in 2007, the Matosinhos String Quartet is a musical formation that has been developing an important work of preservation of the Portuguese musical heritage, interpreting less known works and embracing new works of contemporary composers.

Composed of Vítor Vieira and Juan Maggiorani (violins), Jorge Alves (viola) and Marco Pereira (cello), the Matosinhos String Quartet won the European Concert Hall Organization's Rising Stars Award in 2014, having performed a tour of 16 concerts in some of the most important European concert halls, such as the Barbican in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Hamburg and Cologne Philharmonies and the Konzerthaus in Dortmund.

In Portugal, he regularly performs in the largest Portuguese concert halls, such as Casa da Música, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and Centro Cultural de Belém, and collaborates with some of the most prominent Portuguese musicians, such as Pedro Burmester, António Rosado, Miguel Borges Coelho, António Saiote, Paulo Gaio Lima and Pedro Carneiro.
