Leixões volleyball teams win in the presentation games


Last Sunday, the Sports and Congress Centre of Matosinhos hosted a tribute to António Rijo, athlete, coach, manager, Leixões SC volleyball icon and national sport icon, who passed away last November.

Organized by Leixões Sport Club, with the support of the Matosinhos City Hall and Matosinhos Sport, the António Rijo Trophy had as its motto the presentation of Leixões volleyball senior and youth teams for the 2022/23 season.

The António Rijo Trophy involved a tournament. In the men's seniors, Leixões won by 3-0 against Académica de S. Mamede. In the women's seniors, the Matosinhos team won 3-1 against Castêlo da Maia.

In the tribute to António Rijo, besides his family, the president of Leixões Sport Club, Jorge Moreira, and the councilman for Sports of the Matosinhos City Hall, Vasco Pinho, were also present.

Throughout his sports career, both as an athlete and as a coach, António Manuel Bragança Rijo won numerous national titles. He was captain of the National Team for nine years.

At the service of the Matosinhos City Hall, he was a Town Councillor for Sports and Free Time for two mandates (1997-2001; 2001-2005). From 2005 to 2009, he was administrator of the municipal company Matosinhos Sport. In 2011, he chaired the Sports Advisory Board.

António Rijo passed away on November 25, 2021, at the age of 78.
