PSP and GNR are on the road until Thursday with the campaign "When driving, the cell phone can wait"
In a statement, the GNR said the campaign will have awareness-raising actions and also enforcement actions by the Guard and the PSP "with special focus on roads and accesses with high traffic flow", with the aim of "contributing to reducing the risk of accidents and the adoption of safer behavior by drivers" regarding the use of cell phones while driving.
For today is scheduled an awareness and enforcement action on the IC 2, near Boa Vista in Leiria, from 09:00, and on Tuesday another action on Avenida General Humberto Delgado in Bragança, from 14:00.
On Wednesday, at 08:00, the authorities will be at Avenida João Franco, near the Régua Bridge, in Peso da Régua, and on Friday, from 08:30, at Avenida Monsenhor Mendes do Carmo, in Guarda.
The campaign "At the wheel, the cell phone can wait" involves the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the GNR and PSP and is part of the National Enforcement Plan 2023.
These entities warn that the use of cell phones behind the wheel is a safety risk, since drivers who use them while driving "are slower to recognize and react to dangers", are more prone to lapses in attention and errors of evaluation because they are performing two mental tasks (driving and using the phone) at the same time, in addition to the use of electronic devices while driving makes it difficult to interpret the signs and disrespect the rules of yielding passage, particularly in relation to pedestrians.
