City Hall says fire on the Greta K ship did not affect Matosinhos beaches

The Mayor of Matosinhos revealed this Wednesday, April 19, that the fire on board the ship Greta K, on March 21, off Leixões, had no impact on the beaches of this municipality in the district of Porto

"There was no impact at all on our beaches," said Luísa Salgueiro during the public meeting of the municipal executive, held yesterday in Leça da Palmeira, after being questioned on the matter by independent councillor António Parada.

The ship Greta K left on Tuesday in tow towards the shipyard in Genoa, Italy, after a fire on board on March 21, the Administração dos Portos de Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo (APDL) said yesterday.

On March 21, at 15.20, the ship loaded with 14,000 tonnes of fuel was preparing to enter the Port of Leixões, in Matosinhos, when it declared fire on board, namely in the engine room.

The Port of Leixões immediately activated the Emergency Plan, gathering the APDL Operations Co-ordination Centre (CCO) that started to co-ordinate all actions at sea and on land.

The crews of the speedboats and tugboats remained on board day and night until the ship was handed over to the external tugboat, which took place in the afternoon of 26 March.

The ship had 19 crew members on board, all Filipino nationals.
