Commemorations of the National Combatant Day

14th anniversary of the Matosinhos branch of the League of Combatants

On 29 April, the Matosinhos Branch of the League of Combatants marked National Combatant Day with a tribute to the 70 combatants from the municipality who lost their lives in the Overseas War.

The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of the Matosinhos Town Hall, Luísa Salgueiro, and the President of the Board of the Nucleus, Lieutenant-Colonel Armando Costa.

The commemorations started at the Sendim Cemetery, in Matosinhos, near the Memorial, designed by the painter Alfredo Barros and the architect Abreu Pessegueiro, where the names of all the victims are inscribed.

After laying a wreath next to the Memorial, a minute of silence followed in memory of the victims and the reading of the Army prayer.

Also on the same day, the Matosinhos Branch of the League of Combatants celebrated its 14th anniversary, in a ceremony that took place in a hotel unit, in Leça da Palmeira. Besides the social gathering, combatants were decorated with the Commemorative Campaigns Medal and given Testimonials of Appreciation to members with more than fifty and forty years of membership.
