Cyclotourism Circuit

Initiative inserted in the European Mobility Week

As part of the activities planned for the "European Mobility Week 2022", the municipality of Matosinhos carried out last Sunday an awareness raising action for road users on the advantages of active modes of transport in daily commuting in an urban context.

Taking advantage of some of the existing cycling routes in the city center of Matosinhos, the goal was to demonstrate the viability of other modes of locomotion (besides the car), healthier and without impact on the collective carbon footprint.

The Vice Mayor of Matosinhos, Carlos Mouta, joined the initiative and led the route, with a total of 5.25Km and started at Jardim Basílio Teles, in front of the town hall building. From here the participants, which included members of associations linked to cycling and mountain biking, followed the following streets: Primeiro de Maio; Goa; Alfredo Cunha; Misericórdia; Silva Cunha; Praça Guilhermina Suggia; Av. Eng. Duarte Pacheco; Largo José dos Santos Lessa; Conde São Salvador; Brito Capelo; Av. República; Av. General Norton de Matos; Sousa Aroso; Passeio da Praia; Dr. Afonso Cordeiro; Estrada da Circunvalação; and Praça Cidade do Salvador, finishing the itinerary near the "Anémona".

In addition to cycling routes associated with leisure activities, this initiative also intended to contribute to demonstrating that the future of mobility in cities will involve implementing measures to facilitate and make other more environmentally friendly modes of transport attractive, equalizing access opportunities to public space currently dominated by motor vehicles.

In this regard, reference should be made to the measures included in the Matosinhos Mobility and Transport Plan, the latter integrated in the most comprehensive land use planning document - the Municipal Master Plan - with which the municipality intends to significantly increase the number of cycling routes, in order to create a network that enhances the use of the bicycle for daily travel in the places of the municipality with the highest population density and equipment of public interest.
