Matosinhos Cruise Terminal hosts UN preparatory conference
The preparatory event for the Ocean Conference that the United Nations (UN) will hold in Portugal, from June 27 to July 1, in Lisbon, took place on the 25th of June at the Cruise Terminal of the Port of Leixões.
The event “Finding Action Across the Ocean: Local and Regional Governments” allows for the discussion of opportunities and initiatives that can support the sustainable adaptation of cities and coastal regions, including financing innovation and expanding the protection of the oceans.
The Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Ana Abrunhosa, attended the opening session, as well as the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro. Also present are the President of the Municipal Assembly, Palmira Macedo, the Vice-President of the municipality, Carlos Mouta, the Councilor for the Environment and Energy Transition, Manuela Álvares, and the Councilor for the Promotion and Support of Activities in the Areas of Economic Development and Tourism, Martha Pontes.
The municipality of Matosinhos assumed the commitment to build and implement a coastal resilience strategy, which safeguards the maritime heritage, which protects the populations and the territory. It is recalled that Matosinhos recently became the first city in Portugal to be distinguished by the UN as a “Resilient Hub”, within the scope of the campaign “Building Resilient Cities 2030”.
Present in Matosinhos are representatives from around the world, who lead research, governance and investment in local and regional policies in this area, including the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, Mami Mizutori.
Local and regional governments thus have the opportunity to share their experiences and best practices in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, and to present their projects and commitments in terms of protecting the oceans.
