Last week, the Pulmonology Department performed the first Endobronchial Ecoendoscopy exam (EBUS), in collaboration with the Anesthesiology Department
"It is an endoscopic technique, widely established, which allows the aspiration puncture of mediastinal and pulmonary lesions. It is used in the diagnosis of benign lesions, such as infectious ones, or diseases of the pulmonary interstitium, such as sarcoidosis", explained pulmonologist, Ana Paula Vaz, at the end of the first exam.
This technique "also allows for the diagnosis of malignant lesions, being a mandatory exam in the staging of most patients with lung cancer", she explains.
With the "implementation of this technique at the Pedro Hispano Hospital, we will improve the accessibility of our patients to a fundamental examination for the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer".
Paula Simão, director of the Pulmonology Department, reinforces that this practice "allows for a better decision about the individualized treatments that currently exist for this disease and is therefore an important step for the Department and for patients.
The "collaboration of the Pulmonology Department of the Oporto Hospital and University Center in the training of medical and nursing professionals" should be thanked, thus allowing EBUS to be part of the service's practice from now on.
