“Full-time school”

Municipality project was presented in Barcelona as a reference and innovative model

Matosinhos was present in Barcelona, Catalonia, on the 12th and 13th of May, at the “Primavera 360: L’impuls transformator de l’Educació a temps complet” conferences, which took place at the Joan Miró Foundation, Parc de Montjuïc.

The initiative was intended to reflect and discuss 360º educational policies in Catalonia, a region whose objective was to promote equal educational opportunities for all children and young people, especially outside the school environment.

The municipality was chosen and invited to be present at the event with the aim of sharing its experience of implementing the “Full-Time School – AEC Local Curriculum”, a model and innovative project within the scope of full-time school development, which has with 17 years of work.

It is recalled that the full-time school model was promoted in 2005 as a result of an educational reform by the Ministry of Education and implemented in collaboration and funding with the Municipal Councils and the School Groups. The reform involved extending the opening hours of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education (CEB) schools, from 6 to 10 years old, until 5:30 pm, and a diversification of the project's educational activities, through the AEC (Curricular Enrichment Activities). The main objective of the reform was to help strengthen the learning base in the 1st CEB, equity in access to non-formal education activities and the adjustment of school and work time for families. The Municipality's Education Councilor was present at the event, taking Matosinhos' testimony across borders. António Correia Pinto highlighted the transformative work of the last 6 years (2017-2022), with the implementation of the Local Curriculum in the AEC, in the form of workshops that aim to complement the integration of the heritage (cultural, artistic and sporting) of the municipality in the curriculum of the our students. In particular, the municipality's commitment to the introduction of the Computer and Creative Robotics Program in the AEC was highlighted, which aims to encourage a change with a view to the transition to the new digital age in the municipality's schools.

Based on the presentation of the Portuguese model of the Full-Time School, the debate on 360º educational policies in Catalonia was launched.

It should be noted that Matosinhos is highlighted in the publication of the study: “Portugal: Escola a Tempo Inteiro, una politica de país”, which can be downloaded in pdf, through the link: https://www.educacio360.cat/portugal- school-full-time-a-country-policy/
