Government and Matosinhos join around a hundred people to fight digital illiteracy

The Secretary of State for Digitalization and Administrative Modernization, Mário Campolargo, was a mentor in the first extended session of initiatives of the Eu Sou Digital program taking place this summer

The start of this Government initiative, which had the partnership of the Municipality of Matosinhos, was attended by around a hundred people.

According to Mário Campolargo, this initiative focuses on giving tools to all citizens to “treat digital for you”. For the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Modernization Administration, one of the Government's main goals is to reduce the number of people who have never used the internet, which, at the moment, is close to 16%.

“Ensuring that we fight social and territorial divides and ensuring that no one stayed or will remain in the 20th century must be our ultimate goal,” he stated. An objective that he had already repeated to the Presidents of the Porto Metropolitan Area at the Metropolitan Council meeting that took place this morning and in which he was present. “The DESI data released yesterday” he emphasized “must be, at the same time, a cause for concern but, above all, motivation”.

The 2022 DESI data reveal that Portugal is below the European average in terms of connectivity, however, in comparison, it is above the European average in terms of digital public services, digital technology integration and digital human capital.

Eu Sou Digital is an initiative of the Government, operated by the MUDA team (MUDA - Movement for Active Digital Utilization) in partnership with several entities, which focuses on people who do not have any interaction with the online world, through training actions developed by volunteers in the family context or in places of proximity in the community in which they live (e.g., libraries, schools, parish councils, citizen spaces, local associations). It is aimed at all Portuguese people who have never used the internet, in particular adults over 45 years old who wish to acquire essential digital skills in their daily lives, such as creating an email.
