Since Easter, 40 people have already been rescued from the sea in Matosinhos alone by the municipality's Bathing Rescue System team
The number was revealed this Wednesday, April 19, by the town councillor of Matosinhos in charge of Civil Protection, Marta Pontes.
In response to the intervention of Aurélio Gonçalves, who addressed the issue of bathing rescue in the Executive meeting this Wednesday, the councilor of the Municipality of Matosinhos in charge of Civil Protection, Marta Pontes, explains that the team of the Bathing Rescue Service (SSB) of the municipality is composed of eight lifeguards, two pick-up trucks, two quad bikes and two water scooters.
The mayor notes that the work of the SSB focuses mainly on the "urban beaches of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, where there is a greater concentration of people". "In these months, the bathing rescue work has been decisive", reinforces Marta Pontes. On April 6th, a 17 year old boy drowned on Matosinhos beach, and since then, "more than 40 people have been rescued".
In other words, in less than 15 days, the Matosinhos SSB has rescued an average of three people from the sea.
According to the councillor, the municipality is "focused on understanding how the SSB service can go further".
