INDAQUA Matosinhos doubles investment in photovoltaic panels

INDAQUA Matosinhos installed, this year alone, 540 photovoltaic panels at the Matosinhos ETAR, in addition to the 506 already in operation in various infrastructures in this municipality since 2021. These solar panels provide part of the energy needed for the operation of essential equipment for water management and sanitation

To ensure greater sustainability to its operation, INDAQUA Matosinhos made a new investment in renewable energy sources that support part of the consumption of its equipment. The implementation of a larger number of photovoltaic panels covered three concessions where the company guarantees water supply and wastewater sanitation: Matosinhos, Santa Maria da Feira and Oliveira de Azeméis, in a total of 828 new installations.

Matosinhos was the municipality where the greatest expansion was carried out, with 540 panels integrating the area of the Wastewater Treatment Station. In total, they occupy an area of more than 1,748 m2 and provide 16% of the energy needed for the WWTP to operate.

These solar panels have an approximate power of 300kW and an annual production of 431,820 kWh is estimated, equivalent to the energy consumption of 102 families. The positive environmental impact of this equipment will translate into a reduction in the emission of 121 tons of CO2 per year, estimating that 12,147 trees would be needed to absorb the same volume of carbon dioxide.

“INDAQUA Matosinhos intends to have an operation that is increasingly conscious and sustainable and this investment in solar energy is a strong proof of that will. The high number of solar panels installed translates into an increase in the energy efficiency of the facilities where they are located and shows that, also in terms of energy consumption, it is possible to make water and wastewater management even more respectful of the environment. For this reason, we always seek to ensure that the investments made by INDAQUA Matosinhos are based on energy alternatives from renewable sources”, defends Tiago Fragata, General Director of INDAQUA Matosinhos.

With an investment of around 475 thousand euros, carried out in 2021 and 2022, INDAQUA Matosinhos counts 1,046 solar panels in nine facilities, such as WWTP, Wastewater Pumping Stations and Water Reservoirs.

In addition to Matosinhos, the INDAQUA Group has installed solar panels in infrastructures in Oliveira de Azeméis and Santa Maria da Feira, with some of them being operated by renewable energy in about 50%. In the total of the three municipalities and the two consecutive years of investment, INDAQUA implemented, in 5,510 m2, a total of 1,702 panels with an installed capacity of 911 kW, being able to produce more than 1.3 million kWh per year - the equivalent of consumption of 310 families.
