In LIPOR's area of influence, from 2017 to 2020, we throw away an average of 28 kilograms of textiles per inhabitant per year. The tendency to wear garments for shorter and shorter periods before throwing them away contributes to unsustainable patterns of production and consumption.
At LIPOR, our motto is that “the best waste is the one that is not produced”, working in collaboration with local actors in favor of Waste Prevention. In this way, last year we started the T-Circular initiative, in partnership with the blogger “Lady in Green”, which, through the dissemination of a series of practical and useful tips, aims to help change the way Consumers buy, use and discard their garments, adopting more conscious and sustainable practices in relation to fashion consumption.
Reinforcing this path, this year we created a partnership with Let’s SWAP, a non-profit movement, made up of volunteers, which organizes Exchange Markets.
The purpose of the Exchange Markets is to make Citizens aware of the need to exchange and share items that they no longer wear or that they do not like for other items that make more sense in their closets, thus prolonging the life of the items of clothing that already exist, avoiding their disposal as waste.
The Exchange Markets take place at LIPOR's Parque Aventura. Each participant can bring up to 5 pieces of clothing (including accessories) in good condition and up to 5 books, the pieces they bring are converted into points (these can be used as exchange currency during the market).
Participation in the Exchange Market costs €2 in favor of Let's SWAP, of which €1 will be donated in full to a social institution within LIPOR's geographical area of influence.
The first Market held in May had 35 participants, contributing to the new life of 96 pieces of clothing and 50 books. The next Exchange Markets will take place on the 10th of July and the 11th of September, from 2 pm to 6 pm, at LIPOR's premises.
