Initiative of the Professor Óscar Lopes Group of Schools
It is an initiative within the scope of the Living Peace, “Looking at the World Through the Eyes of the Other” and UBUNTU projects.
Dressed in white, students, teachers, assistants and guardians gathered, with flowers and messages of peace, in the parking lot of the Pedro Hispano Hospital metro station and walked along Villagarcia de Arosa and D. Afonso Henriques avenues. The March for Peace ended next to the City Hall Building. This initiative was joined by the Cultural Center for Social Solidarity in Guifões.
The participants were received by the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, and by the Municipal Councilor for Education, António Correia Pinto.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, the destruction, the thousands of wounded and dead and the flight of millions of people, Luísa Salgueiro said that “we live in unbelievable times”. “People of my generation never thought to see a war in Europe. What is happening in Ukraine is intolerable, she said.
Addressing young people specifically, the mayor stressed that “your responsibility is to ensure that this never happens again”. “Do not condone injustice. We are truly equal. We have the same rights. Never fail to raise your voice for freedom, for equality, for peace”, she appealed.
