Matosinhos hosts event dedicated to gastronomy and ocean sustainability

Out of the Blue is coming to the Matosinhos Market from 23 to 26 October, with a programme dedicated to anticipating the future of gastronomy, tourism and the economy of the sea.

The event's starting point is to understand how to maximise the resources that the oceans provide us with for food, the economy and tourism.

The event will feature free activities open to the community, centred on the market but extending to other parts of the city, culminating in a large street festival. There will also be debates with various researchers, chefs and experts on topics such as gastronomy, sustainability and the economy of the sea.

On 23 and 26 October, there are educational activities for schools and families, showcookings, workshops and tastings with local products, with free entry.

There is also a daily immersive experience at the Market, starting at 6pm, with a projection that recreates the ocean floor, transporting visitors to the underwater world.

On 24 and 25 October there will be talks by experts on topics such as food based on fish or marine plants, the past and future of seafood gastronomy, the role of women in local food systems and the current challenges facing cities. Each talk, with free entry, will include a tasting alluding to the topic under discussion.

Elsewhere, there will be guided tours of Lota de Matosinhos, Fábrica de Conservas Pinhais, CIIMAR (Cruise Terminal) and Leça da Palmeira. These experiences also include dinners in restaurants such as the Boa Nova Tea House, the only paid access moments in the whole event.

The Great Fish Festival will be the final celebration of the event, on 26 October, between 12pm and 10pm. Rua dos Heróis de França will have a community table, where local restaurants will serve freshly prepared fish dishes.

Under the motto ‘the answer is in the ocean’, Out of the Blue ‘seeks to highlight the importance of maritime resources for the coming decades, as a source of food, but also of leisure’, explains Carlos Martins, head of Opium, the entity organising the event, with the support of Turismo de Portugal and in partnership with Matosinhos City Council. ‘We want Out of the Blue to be a space for sharing and experimentation for residents and locals, always with the ocean as the connecting point,’ he adds.

‘In Matosinhos, gastronomy goes beyond the pleasure of the palate. It's a city where gastronomy combines tradition with creativity and where flavour meets sustainability. All this, together with the city's intrinsic link to the seafood industry and economy, makes Matosinhos the perfect setting to host Out of the Blue,’ says Luísa Salgueiro, Mayor of Matosinhos.

With the exception of the restaurants, the Out of the Blue activities are free of charge.
