Matosinhos in Jazz

Alfa Mist, Ashley Henry, GNR and Rebecca Martin are some of the confirmed names

Matosinhos em Jazz returns next July with a lineup that mixes different strands of national and international jazz. Alfa Mist, Ashley Henry, GNR and Rebecca Martin are some of the strong names for the 2022 edition, which starts on July 1 with the exhibition at Jardim Basílio Teles, in front of Matosinhos City Hall.

Increasingly reinforcing its positioning as one of the most important jazz events in Portugal, and after a 2-year break due to the pandemic, Matosinhos em Jazz presents an eclectic program with the music itself starting on July 9th and close on the 30th of July.

“We are increasingly consolidated as an event that brings together several aspects of jazz but also several generations. We want to have a wide offer and be attentive to all the ways that jazz presents us, as well as having more unexpected proposals such as joining the Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música with the GNR. This is the path and the mark of Matosinhos in Jazz., explains Fernando Rocha, councilor for Culture.

The festival starts on the 1st of July with the exhibition of works created by several Portuguese artists. The festival's challenge consisted of a reinterpretation of iconic covers from the world's jazz history. André Tentúgal, Clara Não, Joana Linda, João Fazenda and Vasco Gargalo form the range of artists who accepted the challenge of rethinking iconic album covers by artists such as Charles Mingue, Nina Simone, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, and Chet Baker. The exhibition at Jardim Basílio Teles is open until July 31.

It is in Jardim Basílio Teles, always at 6 pm, that the musical poster starts on July 9 with Mimi Froes and is followed on the following day (10) by trumpeter and vocalist Jéssica Pina. One of the greatest references of contemporary jazz arrives from the United Kingdom, the pianist and composer Alfa Mist (16). The saxophonist Camilla George, born in Nigeria and with projection gained in England, performs on 17 July.

Directly from Porto, residing in London and landing in Matosinhos, it is the turn of guitarist, singer and songwriter Raquel Martins to perform on the 23rd of July. Ashley Henry graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London, and since then her work has been recognized as one of the great strengths of contemporary jazz piano composition and performance. The performance is scheduled for the 24th of July.

For the last two days of the festival, performances by Rebecca Martin & Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos (29 July, 10pm) and GNR & Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música (30 July, 10pm) are planned. These two shows take place at Praça Guilhermina Suggia, in Matosinhos.

All shows are free entry.
