Matosinhos will charge 2 euros per night from January. The money collected by the tourist tax will be used for maintaining pavements and streets, cleaning and urban hygiene. Luísa Salgueiro says that it is intended for municipalities that show tourist pressure.
Matosinhos will start charging a tourist tax of two euros per night from January 2025.
The amount collected from the tourist tax will then be used for maintaining pavements and streets, cleaning and urban hygiene.
According to Luísa Salgueiro, Matosinhos has hired an external organisation to carry out a study of the impact of tourism on the territory, and is ‘the municipality in the north that has a cruise terminal.’
Luísa Salgueiro, who is mayor of Matosinhos and also president of the National Association of Municipalities, emphasises that before charging the tax, municipalities must ‘justify and demonstrate the need for it. It has to have real grounds.’
There are already 38 municipalities that have signed up to the tourist tax, compared to 15 last year. Porto will now charge three euros per night and Lisbon will double its current amount to four euros, which has already raised 203.2 million euros since 2016.
