Matosinhos with a new record number of Blue Flags

A total of 17 beaches in the municipality of Matosinhos will be flying the Blue Flag this summer. Praia Azul-Conchinha is back among those honoured.

Among the awarded beaches are those with Gold Quality, Angeiras

Norte, Angeiras Sul, Agudela, Aterro, Cabo do Mundo, Funtão, Fuzelhas, Leça da

Palmeira, Marreco, Memória, Pedras Brancas, Pedras do Corgo, Senhora-Boa Nova and Quebrada; as well as the beaches Pedras da Agudela, Praia dos Beijinhos and Azul-Conchinha.

The sewage system is managed by INDAQUA Matosinhos, which is one of the

factors that contribute to the quality of the bathing water, which conveys the necessary safety and confidence to the visitors who frequent these beaches.

‘Sanitation management is crucial for the protection of aquatic ecosystems, as it ensures that, before the wastewater is returned to the sea, it is properly treated without any negative environmental impact,’ explains Tiago Fragata, Managing Director of INDAQUA Matosinhos. ‘The correct operation of wastewater networks is therefore a priority in our daily operations, involving a complex and wide-ranging set of pipelines, technical and human resources and infrastructures, some of them large, as is the case with the Matosinhos Wastewater Treatment Plant,’ he adds.

This year, 398 river and coastal beaches in Portugal have been awarded the Blue Flag and 420 have been awarded Gold Quality. In the areas where INDAQUA manages sanitation, a record 44 flags were awarded: 31 in Matosinhos, 11 in Vila do Conde and two in Santa Maria da Feira.
