MatosinhosHabit defines strategic measures to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030

Municipal company bets on recyclable building materials and energy efficiency systems to reduce carbon emissions from municipal buildings. The Conjunto Habitacional da Guarda will be intervened with a more sustainable approach next March

The strategic reflection session "Matosinhos Carbon Neutrality 2030" participated in by the municipal company resulted in an action plan with measures and solutions to reduce carbon emissions by 85% and limit the average temperature rise by 1.5ºC in the municipality. The main goal is to reach carbon neutrality in 2030, anticipating the decarbonization foreseen for the year 2050.

This work session brought together the Mayor of the Municipality, Luísa Salgueiro, the Councillor for the Environment and Energy Transition and Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of MatosinhosHabit, Manuela Álvares, the Administrator of MatosinhosHabit, Helena Vaz, the Executive Director of the Porto Energy Agency, Rui Pimenta and representatives of the unions of the parishes, who analyzed four areas of action for the completion of the strategic plan "Matosinhos Carbon Neutrality 2030":

1. Energy

2. Sustainable mobility

3. Municipality action and stakeholder involvement

4. Financing

Several initiatives were also defined to stimulate and motivate the participation of the community in the process of decarbonisation of the municipality.

ACTIONS BY MATOSINHOSHABIT IN THE SCOPE OF DECARBONIZATION

The intervention in the municipal buildings managed by MatosinhosHabit has several sustainable and energy saving practices, such as the use of recyclable, resistant and efficient building materials, which contribute, directly or indirectly, to the reduction of carbon emissions.

A practical example is the rehabilitation of the Conjunto Habitacional da Guarda FFH (Housing Development Fund), in Perafita. This is a project for the energy improvement of 12 homes, incorporating more efficient materials and using energy saving and thermal efficiency systems, such as the external thermal insulation system (ETICS) and the solar hot water system (DHW).

The 2nd phase of this work will start in March 2023 and will be completed in the first quarter of 2024, with a total investment of 1,175,312.93 €.
