Mercadona makes 1.778 billion and creates 1,700 new jobs in 2024

Mercadona has already reached 7,000 employees in Portugal. In 2025, the brand plans to create another 1,000 jobs and open 10 shops, one of them in Matosinhos.

 


In 2024, Mercadona increased its consolidated sales by 9% to 38,835 million euros, of which 37,057 million corresponded to Spain and the remaining 1,778 to Portugal.

In 2024, Mercadona created more than 6,000 new jobs, 1,700 in Portugal and 4,300 in Spain, reaching a team of 7,000 and 103,000 people in each country, respectively.

To recognise the effort, commitment and example of a high-performance team that never sets itself limits, Mercadona has increased salaries by 8.5%, which means that, in Portugal, an employee with more than 4 years' seniority will have received, on March 1st this year, around €4,500 gross in variable remuneration, corresponding to 3 monthly payments.

The brand has 60 shops in Portugal, out of a total of 1,674 that were part of the company's supermarket network at the close of 2024.


Mercadona in Portugal

After its first five years in the country, Mercadona has created 7,000 jobs through open-ended contracts from day one and attractive salaries.

With more than 1 billion euros invested in Portugal during this period, Mercadona's operation in Portugal has been profitable for the first time, with the company generating a total of 7 million euros in profit from its activity in 2024.

In order to continue supplying its network of 60 supermarkets, the company worked closely with its national suppliers, from whom it bought 1.4 billion euros. Likewise, the effort and commitment of the team, the opening of new shops and the commitment to an efficient, quality assortment have made it possible to reduce the price of 1,500 products.

In 2024, Mercadona made a total investment of 219 million euros in Portugal, achieved sales of 1,778 million euros, 27% more than the previous year, and contributed 237 million euros in taxes through the Portuguese company Irmãdona Supermercados, based in Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto).


Forecast for 2025

The company plans to invest more than 1 billion euros and create more than 1,000 jobs by 2025. Likewise, its forecasts include a 3.5 per cent increase in sales, to reach 40.1 billion euros, and the consolidation of a profit identical to that of the last financial year.

In Portugal, the company plans to invest a further 157 million euros and open 10 new shops, including two supermarkets in Lisbon during the year.
