Norman Foster in Matosinhos

Architect visited the Piscina das Marés


Norman Foster, renowned English architect, was yesterday in Matosinhos, at Piscina das Marés, the work of the architect from Matosinho, Álvaro Siza Vieira.

Accompanied by the Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Matosinhos, Fernando Rocha, by the Councilor for Economic Development, Commerce and Tourism, Marta Pontes, and by the administrator of Matosinhos Sport, Henrique Calisto, Norman Foster visited the Piscina das Marés, a reference work , in your words.

A National Monument since 2011, Piscina das Marés is the only Portuguese building included in the book "One Hundred Twentieth Century Buildings", a reference publication of 20th century world architecture coordinated by Thom Mayne and which brings together several Pritzker Prize winners, among them Alvaro Siza.

Built in the 1960s and inaugurated in 1966, the Piscina das Marés was, between 2019 and 2021, the subject of a major intervention due to the deterioration of various elements, such as the reinforced concrete structure, the main pool tank and the salt water filtration. Álvaro Siza Vieira signed the rehabilitation project, having closely monitored the execution of the work and all its specificities.

It should be noted that Norman Foster, currently Baron Foster of the Thames, was born in Stockport, in the region of Cheshire, England, in 1935. From a humble family, he always stood out as a diligent student, for his excellent performance in the schools where he studied and from an early age. showed some interest in architecture.

Foster studied architecture at the University of Manchester, graduating in 1961. He later became friends with Richard Rogers, his future business partner, at Yale University, where he completed his master's degree. He returned to the UK in 1962 and became one of Europe's greatest architects.

It is known worldwide for its bold architectural style and for carrying out works and restorations of buildings belonging to government agencies in several countries, using intelligent design systems.

His work is spread around the world, namely in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, France, China, Germany, Spain, Kazakhstan, the United States of America, among others.

In addition to a title of nobility and the Pritzker Prize, Norman Foster has also twice received the Stirling Prize and the Prince of Asturias Prize.
