North of the country to be hit by concentration of particulate pollutants in the air

Citizens living in the North of the country should exercise special caution when exposed to the air this Friday, February 3rd

The region will be hit, this afternoon, by a concentration of particulate pollutants in the air, which will result in a pollution peak.

According to data from the air quality monitoring maps, the most serious situation will happen in the areas between Braga and Porto, but also the areas of Aveiro and Lisbon will be affected.

Considering the harmfulness of the phenomenon, experts recommend the adoption of protective measures by the population, such as the use of masks, especially for the most vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly and people with respiratory diseases.

On his Twitter page, geographer Alfredo Graça says that the "dry and stable weather is pleasant for most people due to the associated 'calm'," but explains that "pollution gains prominence with high pressure because pollutants do not disperse due to processes of subsidence, thermal inversions and lack of wind.

Additionally, the concentration of factories and heavy road traffic may also justify the phenomenon in the areas most affected by pollutant particles in the air.
