Ophthalmology Service ended 2022 winning awards

The Glaucoma Cases Meeting, which took place on January 21st and counted with the presence of several public and private ophthalmology services at a national level, welcomed doctor Renato Barbosa, 4th year intern, who presented a case of a malignant glaucoma

"I presented the clinical case about a recurrent malignant glaucoma in a patient from the Algarve, which was a complex diagnostic and then therapeutic challenge for the team," says the doctor.

"The patient had closed angle glaucoma in one eye, underwent surgery and developed a rare condition of malignant glaucoma. To cure him and save the eye was a huge challenge. Due to the rarity of the case, it was taken to this meeting and we are very happy for the recognition", Paula Tenedório, Director of the Ophthalmology Department at Pedro Hispano Hospital, is pleased.

But already in September, the same doctor, Renato Barbosa, had received an award at the ESCRS Summer 2022 at the 40th annual Congress of the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons.

"We presented a paper on the analysis of a series of scleral suspension lens implantation surgeries performed at Pedro Hispano Hospital. This is a complex surgery involving the placement of an intraocular lens that is sutured to the sclera, performed in selected cases."

At the end of the year, the 3rd year internist, Ana Rita Viana, was also awarded the prize for best oral communication with the paper "Long-term results of sulcus implantation of a single-piece acrylic intraocular lens following posterior capsule rupture during phacoemulsification", at the International Congress 26th ESCRS Winter Meeting 2022. The paper was about "a review of the long-term functional and safety results after complicated cataract surgery with posterior capsule rupture and intraocular lens placement in the sulcus", added Ana Rita Viana.

In the Pediatric area, her work was also recognized with two posters presented at the international congress, the "47th Annual Meeting of the European Paediatric Ophthalmological Society" held in Munich.

One of the posters presented "a rare clinical case of a child with idiopathic choroidal neovascularization from our service, successfully treated with intravitreal injections of aflibercept (anti-VEGF)".

The second paper presented showed "a review of neonatal conjunctivitis cases from our hospital over the past 10 years. This was a poster made jointly with the Pediatrics and Neonatology specialty" - said Ana Rita Viana.

And 2022 would end with another award also of her authorship, when she presented an oral communication at the 65th Portuguese Congress of Ophthalmology - National Congress of the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology, held in Coimbra. He won the SPO/DAVI Award "Best presentation in the area of Glaucoma".

In his presentation he demonstrated that "good control of intraocular pressure early after glaucoma surgeries performed in our service (trabeculectomy and deep non-penetrating sclerectomy) results in a higher probability of surgical success and effective control of intraocular pressure in the long term".
