President of the European Investment Bank visits the Port of Leixões

Nadia Calviño has been President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) since January and visited the Port of Leixões.

The Administration of the Ports of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo welcomed the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Nadia Calviño, on a visit to Portugal last Sunday.

APDL has a 60 million euro loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB). This funding is intended to support the improvement of maritime access to the Port of Leixões, through the deepening of the access channel and the manoeuvring basin, as well as the extension of the existing breakwater by 300 metres, work that began in 2021 and which aims to increase the capacity to receive larger ships, improve the safety of port operations and promote the port's competitiveness at international level.

During her visit to the Port of Leixões, President Nadia Calviño was welcomed by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, João Pedro Neves, and had the opportunity to observe ‘in loco’ the ongoing work on the extension of the outer breakwater, which was resumed in April 2024 after the winter break.Currently, this work consists of depositing rockfill of different types by sea and land, and next month the laying of the structure's cladding blocks in dense concrete is expected to resume.

The President of the EIB said: ‘I was delighted to visit the Port of Leixões. The EIB is financing the work underway to deepen the access channels for larger ships, increasing the country's commercial potential, benefiting the competitiveness of Portuguese companies and the strength of the European economy’.

João Pedro Neves, Chairman of APDL, expressed his satisfaction at the President's visit, emphasising ‘the importance of funding to support the improvement of maritime access to the port, which is crucial to increasing the capacity and efficiency of the Port of Leixões, strengthening its position and promoting economic growth and competitiveness.’
