Ingka Centres' Meeting Places in Portugal are promoting screenings among communities and social partners in order to involve groups of the population whose access to preventive actions is limited
The meeting places MAR Shopping Algarve and MAR Shopping Matosinhos continue to offer free health screenings and relaxation every month, with the aim of raising awareness in the communities where they are located on the importance of early detection of health indicators that require medical monitoring, as well as to advise on best practices in matters of health and well-being. In September, MAR Shopping Algarve will monitor risk factors for diabetes and hypertension. MAR Shopping Matosinhos will host cardiovascular screenings, which include the performance and analysis of electrocardiograms developed by the Portuguese Foundation of Cardiology.
The awareness actions will take place on the last weekend of the month, September 24th and 25th, between 11am and 7pm. In MAR Shopping Algarve, visitors can access the initiative near the Pharmacy and Clinic HPA (floor 0). In MAR Shopping Matosinhos, the action will take place on level 0, next to the LEGO® Fan Factory. Access will work in order of arrival. Visitors may access the detailed agenda of the two meeting places on their official website.
In MAR Shopping Algarve, the Pharmacy Silveira will be responsible for monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar, in order to detect early health conditions in which these indicators are silent risk factors, such as diabetes and hypertension, which may even appear associated causing major complications such as heart failure, stroke, myocardial infarction, kidney failure, gradual loss of vision and sclerosis of the arteries.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Portugal
MAR Shopping Matosinhos hosts the Portuguese Foundation of Cardiology. Did you know that 400 thousand Portuguese and 15 million Europeans are affected by heart failure? That approximately 10 thousand people a year are victims of sudden cardiac death? That 200 thousand Portuguese are affected by atrial fibrillation every year? That every year four thousand people die of myocardial infarction? Or that 12 thousand Portuguese are affected by stroke every year?
These frightening numbers happen mainly because more than half the Portuguese population is overweight, 4% suffer from hypertension, 30% have high cholesterol, 20% smoke, and 13%, aged between 20 and 79, suffer from diabetes.
The cardiovascular screenings that the Portuguese Foundation of Cardiology will hold at MAR Shopping Matosinhos, on September 24 and 25, near the entrance of MAR, on level -1, from 11am to 7pm, aim above all to raise awareness among the population to adopt appropriate lifestyles and control known risk factors such as high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, smoking, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and psychosocial stress. Thus, parameters such as the level of total cholesterol in the blood, blood pressure, body mass index, and abdominal perimeter will be monitored, in addition to electrocardiograms. The team will be made up of health professionals who, besides making the technical evaluations, are able to give nutritional and lifestyle advice.
The schedule of screenings will be maintained throughout the year 2022 and those interested will find it available and always updated on the website of the meeting places MAR Shopping - www.marshopping.com.
