The goal is to improve safety conditions for pedestrians
This Friday, the Municipality of Matosinhos begins an intervention to upgrade the sidewalks on Armando Vaz street, in Perafita, in order to improve the safety conditions of pedestrian circulation.
The poor condition of the sidewalk and the small size of the wooded sidewalks make circulation difficult, especially for pedestrians with reduced mobility and those carrying baby strollers.
The solution, therefore, is to intervene in the trees, using techniques to adapt the floor around the trees. In cases where this is not possible, these trees will be removed so that the sidewalk can be reconstructed and safe pedestrian circulation can be ensured. For each tree removed, three will be planted in the vicinity, namely at the junctions of Rua Oriental and Rua Padre Ângelo Ferreira Pinto.
Most of the trees are located on the south sidewalk. This is where the public lighting system is installed and where the smallest and oldest trees are.
Sixty trees will remain, and in these cases the sidewalk will be repaired and the gutters will be widened around them, so that the trees can grow in the future without interfering with pedestrian circulation.
The community itself will provide the initial impetus for these improvements, beginning on Friday, March 3, at 10:30 a.m., with the school community organizing itself to plant the new trees in a sustained and guided manner. On Saturday, March 4, at 3pm the community at large and local organizations will conclude the planting.
The forecast is that the work will last for 45 days. All steps will be taken to minimize the impact on the level of automobile circulation by meeting the deadlines for execution.
