50 plots for organic farming
Since 2005, the Matosinhos City Hall, in partnership with Lipor, has been implementing in several places of the municipality the project "Horta à Porta - organic gardens of the Porto region".
This project aims to promote the quality of life of the population, through good agricultural practices and the creation of dynamic green spaces, promoting, simultaneously, the contact with nature, the reduction of waste production, especially organic matter, the development of healthy habits and good environmental practices in general.
The most recent was created in Perafita and inaugurated yesterday afternoon, with the presence of the Mayor, Luísa Salgueiro, the President of the Municipal Assembly, Palmira Macedo, the Vice-president of the municipality, Carlos Mouta, the Alderman Fernando Rocha and the President of the Parish Union of Perafita, Lavra and Santa Cruz do Bispo, Lurdes Queirós. The Ribeiras Organic Garden has 50 plots, containers for rubbish and compost, water and tools warehouse.
Those who signed up to receive the plot of land also received training in organic farming. The products are for their own consumption.
The construction of the Ribeiras Organic Garden integrates the Ribeiras Park, an area with 9685 m2, which was subject to an intervention by the local authority. The construction work included the installation of tables, benches and barbecues, the creation of pedestrian/cycle paths, the installation of lighting, the reinforcement of the vegetation with autochthonous species (and the cleaning of infesting vegetation) and the landscape and environmental requalification of the water line.
A half pipe skate ramp was also installed where BMX, skateboarding or roller skating can be practiced, as well as a field for informal basketball.
The construction work also involved increasing the number of parking spaces.
