Road bridge between Porto and Gaia will cost 110 million euros

The new rail and road bridge over the Douro River, which will link Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, will cost 110 million euros, according to a response from the Ministry of Infrastructure to which Lusa had access this Thursday, April 6

This response comes after the PSD parliamentary group questioned the government on 13 February about what type of high-speed bridge will be built between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, how much it will cost and when its construction will begin.

In a text, in which the government also reaffirms that the bridge will have, at the upper level, a deck for railway use and, at the lower level, one for road transport, it is stated that the new crossing is included in Lot A: Porto (Campanhã) - Aveiro (Oiã) of the new Porto-Lisbon High Speed Line.

Regarding the date for the start of the works, the Ministry of Infrastructures did not reply, explaining that Lot A is in the process of Environmental Impact Assessment.

It should be noted that the high speed project, which plans to link Porto and Lisbon in around one hour and 15 minutes, includes the construction of a new bridge over the Douro River, a bridge with two decks, one for road use and the other for railway purposes, integrated in the Porto-Lisbon High Speed project.

This new bridge replaces the road infrastructure announced by the municipalities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia that would be named D. António Francisco dos Santos, in honour of the former bishop of Porto, and would be paid for by the two municipalities.

However, on 24 February, the mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues, said that the State will "fully" finance the new road-rail bridge over the Douro River.
