Book of the Feasts of the Lord of Matosinhos
As is customary at the time of the Festas do Senhor de Matosinhos, the Municipality of Matosinhos promotes the launch of the so-called “book of parties”, a publication usually related to the city, its people and traditions.
This year, once again the tradition was fulfilled and the Main Hall of the City Hall was filled, on the municipal holiday of Senhor de Matosinhos, for the presentation of the book “Senhor de Matosinhos – Contar a Festa”, a compendium of plays written by several journalists and some unknown authors about the city's festivities, from 1860 to the present day.
Fernando Rocha, Councilor for Culture of the Câmara de Matosinhos and president of ANCIMA (Association for the Integrated Development of Matosinhos), the entity responsible for organizing the festivities, recalled the inspiration that the Romaria do Senhor de Matosinhos has been for many journalists over the years , which is why it was not difficult to gather texts dating from 1860 to the present day.
The presentation of the book was attended by the historian Joel Cleto, and with the journalists, Germano Silva, responsible for the preface to the work, and Alfredo Mendes, author of some of the texts present in the publication.
The book “Senhor de Matosinhos – Contar a Festa” also includes photographs by Francisco Teixeira and texts by Ribeiro dos Santos, Emídio de Oliveira, Santos Lessa and Joaquim Queirós, in addition to other unknown authors.
In addition to the written pieces, the work recalls, in images, Francisco Teixeira's perspective on the Festas do Senhor de Matosinhos. Most of the images in the book can also be seen in the photography exhibition “Senhor de Matosinhos – Light, moments, feelings and emotions”, on display at the Florbela Espanca Municipal Library Gallery until July 2nd.
The exhibition portrays the various facets, between the religious and the pagan, of the 700-year-old pilgrimage. From ceramics to plenty, from carousels, from gigantones to bass drums, from regional sweets to table football, from the “à la minute” horse, from fireworks to the fireworks of dolls, from the procession to the flowery altars, all the details fit in the photographer’s lens. .
Vice-president Carlos Mouta and councilor Manuela Álvares also attended the initiative.
