Shopping centers will have systems for the deposit of non-reusable beverage containers

APCC - Portuguese Association of Shopping Centers and SDR Portugal have recently signed a cooperation protocol for the development and implementation, in the context of shopping centers, of the deposit and refund system for non-reusable beverage packaging in Portugal

Training, awareness and information on the operation of the future SDR for the final consumer and, in particular, for APCC member companies, are some of the key aspects ensured by SDR Portugal under this protocol. The SDR Portugal also assumes the commitment to promote the implementation and management of a system that promotes the accessible participation of all consumers and, in particular, of the HoReCa channel in the context of Shopping Centers. Also, the SDR Portugal will share information and knowledge produced from the studies developed, and according to the regulatory framework that will be defined for the SDR implementation model in Portugal.

APCC commits to collaborate with SDR Portugal in the development of the most effective solutions for the collection of single use beverage packaging and deposit value returns in the context of Shopping Centers and the implementation of the national SDR.

Both, SDR Portugal and APCC, also commit with this protocol to develop actions of dissemination, information and training on the SDR and collaborate in various initiatives - such as events, studies and working groups - appropriate for the proper implementation of the SDR in Portugal.

The model proposed by SDR Portugal, complementary to the one currently in place, is to increase the number of packages collected and recycled, reducing their impact on the environment and contributing to meeting the targets that Portugal is committed to.

"The protocol signed with APCC is another sign that the solution we are aiming for is the most suitable for the response that the country needs. We are increasingly prepared and the agreements that we have reached show the strength of the proposal of the SDR Portugal and the ability we know it will have to help the country meet the targets it is committed to," said Leonardo Mathias, president of SDR Portugal, in a press release, stressing that "the protocol established with APCC will allow us to reach even more people, providing the necessary solution in the places where consumption happens and effectively. We are ready. We just need to know the basics so that the system can be implemented and we can all start contributing more and better so that Portugal can have the results it needs.

"Sustainability is one of the central axes of the Shopping Centres' actions, so we promote a series of initiatives ranging from energy saving, to reducing water consumption, to reducing waste and promoting recycling. In this sense, the protocol now signed with SDR Portugal represents another step to increase recycling in our spaces, boosting the promotion of recycling among our customers," said Cristina Moreira Santos, president of APCC.

For now, no dates have been advanced to move forward with this deposit and refund system for non-reusable beverage packaging in Portugal.
