The Market of the Future

Celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Matosinhos Market

On May 27, 1952, the then President of the Republic Craveiro Lopes inaugurated the Matosinhos Municipal Market. To the public, the space only opened on August 1 of that year.

To mark the 70 years of the Matosinhos Market, the municipality prepared a special program, from May 27 to December 27, based on seven pillars - People, Nature, Gastronomy, Art, Crafts, Healthy Life and Community.

The objective is to make the history of this space better known, of sellers and customers, without forgetting the neighborhood that surrounds it.

One of the most important moments took place yesterday and was attended by the mayor, Luísa Salgueiro, the councilor for Economic Development, Commerce and Tourism, Marta Pontes, and the market operators.

Toy craftsman Simão Bolivar presented the result of the artistic residency “Mercado de Brincar”: a “Bancar de Brincar”, made from materials recovered from waste, such as egg cartons, flour sacks, styrofoam boxes used to transport fish. or bottles of bleach for cleaning, which are generated every day during the normal operation of the market and which in this way have gained a new life and promise to tell old and new stories.

Simão Bolivar also created a cardboard toy in the shape of a fish to be offered to operators and visitors to the space. “80% of visitors/tourists come here for the fish,” he explained.

The secretary-general of the Portuguese Nutrition Association presented the initiative “Bem Saber/Bem Fazer - Seventy good practices to learn the best way to do well… for you… and for the planet”. Helena Real highlighted the food literacy work developed and the need to “look at food with respect”, to “mitigate the food waste produced”.

The exhibition “Faces of the Market” was also inaugurated. Curated by the illustrator Tierri Luís, the show features images of all current operators and employees of the Mercados de Angeiras and Matosinhos, along with texts by Adélia Carvalho.

As part of the exhibition, the book “Faces of the Markets” was created. Customers from the Matosinhos and Angeiras municipal markets are invited to collect personalized stamps with the face and name of each operator.

The Mayor stressed that the “Mercado is a representation of what Matosinhos was, what it is and what it wants to be”, giving as an example the coexistence between the traditional fish, fruit and vegetable stalls, restaurants, entrepreneurship, design and tourism. “Everything happens in this space. We preserve traditions, but with our eyes on the future. We have a responsibility to make it even better for future generations”, stressed Luísa Salgueiro.
