Construction of the second phase underway
The works of the second phase of the Leça Green Corridor, between the Moreira and Carro bridges, with an extension of 6.1 km, are underway. Next summer more kilometers of pedestrian and bike path will be ready so that everyone can enjoy the banks of the Leça River.
The Mayor, Luísa Salgueiro, the Councilwoman Manuela Álvares and the President of the Parish Union of Custóias, Leça do Balio and Guifões visited today the area of Goimil Bridge, in the parish of Custóias, to check on the ground how the implementation of the second phase of the project is going on. The project was designed by the landscape architect Laura Roldão Costa.
The "Leça Green Corridor" is an environmental and mobility project, with a strong cultural, economic, touristic and social character, in order to allow the landscape and environmental enhancement of the river Leça and its banks, and to contribute to territorial cohesion, linking the coast to the interior, through a specific channel for the use of soft transport modes. In addition to the requalification and revitalization of the banks of the river Leça and its surroundings, the project includes the construction of a pedestrian and cycling path along its banks, creating a mobility alternative for daily trips, on foot and by bicycle, between residential and business areas located in its surroundings.
Co-financed by FEDER, through the community program Portugal 2020/Norte 2020, the project encompasses three phases, with a total of 18 km of interventions. The first phase, between the Moreira and Pedra bridges (including the connection to Picoutos), with a length of 6.9 km, has been concluded since last July, with an investment of 7.2 million euros that included the construction of a bike and pedestrian pathways, among other improvements, increasing the visibility of the river Leça and its pollution sources, promoting greater contact with nature and new opportunities for mobility along the river.
The third phase, between Ponte do Carro and Porto de Leixões/ Foz do Rio Leça, with connections to the center of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, which will have a length of 4.7 km, is currently being studied.
