The strike is not part of the indefinite strike, which has been going on since December and which the union has decided to end at the end of this week.

"It was decided, with the strike committees, to suspend [the indefinite strike] on April 16, but also remained open, because negotiations continue, new forms of struggle that might be necessary," Carla Piedade, of the STOP board, explained to LUSA today.

The new strike is associated with the demonstration called by STOP for April 25, in Lisbon.

"The professionals continue to show their commitment to this struggle to defend public school, against the regime of competitions and for the return of service time, which has not yet happened," said the union leader.

The management and recruitment regime for teachers was approved in March, after several months of negotiations without agreement, and the negotiation process with the Ministry of Education is now underway regarding the correction of asymmetries resulting from the career freeze.

The measures proposed by the executive impact on the career progression of teachers in service since 30 August 2005, i.e. who went through the two periods of freezing service time, but are considered insufficient by the unions, which do not relinquish the six years, six months and 23 days of unrecovered service time.
