“Xicogaivota” creates a sculptural piece at the Matosinhos Market
An artistic installation by Ricardo Ramos, better known artistically as “Xicogaivota” was born from collected waste, mainly plastic, either on the beaches of the municipality or in the municipal markets.
A woodcarver, trained at the Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation, Ricardo Ramos has been active as a 3D artist, combining his practice as a professional fisherman and shellfish gatherer. In May 2017, he created the “Xicogaivota” brand, the result of daily proximity to the sea and contact with the reality of pollution that is present in the most remote places such as beaches and non-concession areas that are difficult to access.
The sculptural piece can be appreciated at the Matosinhos Municipal Market. The completion of this work was signaled today, World Oceans Day, by the Mayor, Luísa Salgueiro, and by the Councilor for Economic Development, Commerce and Tourism, Marta Pontes.
The artistic installation is part of the event “If I were the sea”, which took place from May 6 to June 8, and which was co-financed by the Operational Program Mar 2020, Portugal 2020 and the European Union, through the European Maritime Affairs and of Fisheries.
With this event, the Municipality of Matosinhos intended to promote the circular economy among operators, customers and the community in general, through the sharing of processes and responsible production and consumption practices and solutions for the reuse and reconversion of materials in everyday life.
